Native Americans & Presbyterian Missions: SE Tribes

From the mid-1700s, Presbyterian and Congregational missionaries served Native American tribes in the Southeast Colonies and later states. These missionaries fought to keep tribal lands from spreading pioneers, as well as provide schools and training to help tribes. These tribes included Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek and others.

Exhibit traces the Presbyterian missions to the Dakota and Lakota Sioux from the 1880s to the present day. The large wooden hand-carved sign is for the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Indian Miission from circa 1890s.
